The NHS England Interoperability Handbook provides a description of the benefits of interoperability. It defines interoperability as “the ability of two or more systems or components to exchange information and to use the information that has been exchanged.”
But what are the clinical and business benefits of interoperability? They can be defined under the following concepts:
1/ Decision Support
Using mobile devices such as computers-on-wheels or tablets enable real-time recording and reviewing information (from integrated systems) at the point of care, including notifications and alerts such as safeguards, patiens with specific diagnoses and conditions and even patients ready to discharge, to help healthcare staff to make the right decisions
2/ Transfer of Care
Enabling the seamless transition of accurate and comprehensive information between and within care settings.
3/ Remote and Assistive Care
Allowing healthcare staff to extend their clinical reach to patients who can benefit from their expertise. Patients can have better outcomes because of timelier access from carers who can apply the highest standards of care associated with their clinical discipline when evaluating the patient. This approach also reduces unnecessary admissions or readmissions through remote consultations with clinicians as they are able to better manage their health situations while at home.
4 / Population Health and Care Management
The ability to connect systems to enable retrieval of rich set of data that would help in identifying (through some form of predictive analysis such as risk stratification) patients at high risk of health condition, or readmission and safeguarding.
5 / Asset and Resource Optimisation
Using technology to understand what is happening and where, at all times – so identifying current capacity, modelling future demand via rich integrated data set.
6/ Electronic Record/Case File
Detailed care records are likely to be held in a number of clinical systems across a locality. In order to bring these records together you need to integrate / connect these systems.
